I’m Here!

(Obligatory “I haven’t forgotten about my blog – no really, I haven’t!” post follows)

A lot has happened since my last post – I’ve moved to Blacksburg, started a job with Rackspace, lost an Oreo eating contest, learned to cook, bought an iPad, stuck my finger in a blender, grown a garden, and a lot more! I’ve been busy with a lot of little projects, but have unfortunately neglected this blog so far. Expect to see new content in the coming weeks; I have a lot of code snippets, news, and thoughts I’d like to share!

Also – a teaser screenshot of the iPhone app I’m working on:

What could it be?

What could it be?

Tell you about it in the next post!

Multi-Touch Card Application

Posted by Mynnx on May 31st, 2009

One topic I have been interested in lately is that of human-computer interaction. Everything from network-enabled toasters to tattoo displays show that screen and keyboard are not the only ways to get your information. When I saw Jeff Han’s video on his multi-touch research, I found a new shiny thing to play with:

I got involved with an undergraduate research group last semester focusing on multi-touch interaction techniques. We developed a storyboarding application in Flash and the open-source touchlib library and used tBeta to process touch events from our webcam. Here is a video of it in action!

When users are dissatisfied with the cards on the table, they may drum their fingers on an empty area of the canvas to produce new cards under each of their fingers. To delete a card, use 3 or more fingers and pinch it. Perform the opposite motion on an empty spot on the canvas to show the dead cards and to recover them.

This is my first foray into the multi-touch world, and I plan on contributing to the library and community of touchlib to make it even more powerful and developer-friendly. If you need help setting it up, or are interested in multi-touch, check out the NUIGroup Forums. I’m active there – stop by and say hi!
